Changes to Skilled Occupation Lists

An announcement was made today that the skilled occupation lists for all skilled visas is changing as of tomorrow – 19 April 2017.
The old SOL and CSOL will no longer be applicable and two new lists will be available:
The Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) which will apply to all new Skilled Independent (subclass 189), Skilled Regional family sponsored (subclass 489) and Temporary Graduate – Graduate work stream (subclass 485) visas, lodged as from 19 April 2017. Any applications lodged already in these visa categories will not be affected.The Short-term Skilled List (STSOL) which with the MLTSSL will apply to all new Employer nomination Direct Entry (subclass 186), Skilled Nominated (subclass 190), Skilled Regional state sponsored (subclass 489), Temporary work (subclass 457) and Training (subclass 407) visas.
There will however be caveats on some of the occupations on this combined list for applications under the 457 program. At this stage we do not know what these are but it could be that there is a requirement that the occupation is located in a regional area of Australia or that a certain salary must be offered. Occupations flagged to have this caveat include Accountants, Bakers, Cafe and Restaurant managers, Chefs, Cooks, Contract Administrators, Customer Service managers, Graphic Designers, Hairdressers, Management Consultants, Marketing Specialists, Massage therapists and Supply and Distribution Managers.
There will be 200 occupations removed from the current CSOL when the STSOL comes into effect from tomorrow. These include Biochemist, Bed and Breakfast operator, call centre manager, construction estimator, HR Advisor, Life Scientist NEC and Retail Buyer. A full list can be found here:
Any applications lodged already in a subclass other than under subclass 457 visas, will not be affected as it will only apply to application lodged after 19 April 2017. However it will apply to all 457 nominations and visa applications, even if they have been lodged already.
